Custodian Handbook¶

Welcome to the Custodian Handbook. This document is intended for custodian collaborators of the ExELang project. It is meant to help researchers, research assistants, engineers and students, as well as help with onboarding new team members. It contains resources about rights and responsibilities as a custodian and data user, and provides step-by-step instructions for the most common tasks in our workflow.

Vocab¶

A number of specific terms are used in this handbook, here is a list of common terms you will encounter and what they designate:

• referent PI - If you are reading this handbook, you probably are a student or collaborator of one of the custodian researchers of the project, namely Okko Räsänen, Sho Tusji or Marvin Lavechin. Your referent PI is your supervisor.

Data archives¶

The project data is shared through three archives: HomeBank, Databrary, and The Language Archive. As a custodian, you have been granted access to this data through one of those platforms. You must comply with the conditions listed in the relevant platform agreement:

• The Language Archive Terms of Use

Onboarding new students / collaborators¶

As a custodian, students and collaborators will need access to the data to work on it. The necessary steps are listed here.

Citation practices¶

The publications that result from working with this data must comply with the set of rules here

New models developed¶

One of the reason of the creation of this system of data sharing is to facilitate the developement of tools that can analyze data by themselves. We ask that custodians share their models openly and put the necessary work to integrate them in user distributed platforms, and in aprticular in ELSI to give back to data contributors valuable analysis.

In order to integrate those into ELSI, you have to follow those guidelines.

Using the data¶

The data shared in this system is stored in a structured way. The details of how it organized and the tools that can help utilize it are described here

Synchronization of custodians¶

The custodians may modify and add information to the datasets. As they are a group of 3, they should maintain synchronization of the data between their respective labs by following those guidelines.
