3. Corpus Collectors: Rights and Responsibilities

[!NOTE] In a nutshell, corpus collectors, typically the data originators, retain ownership of and responsibility for their dataset at all times. Their datasets will be cited in all publications using them; in rare cases (see Scenario C), the citation may be in an annex. For research beyond model development and benchmarking, corpus collectors will be notified and offered the option to withdraw their data or join as co-authors.

Rights

  • Retain ownership and managerial control of their dataset at all times.
  • Withdraw their dataset from the ExELang Consortium at any time by revoking custodian access through the relevant scientific archive.
  • Receive formal citation and acknowledgement in all publications using their data. Note that for model development and benchmarking publications, citation does not imply co-authorship.
  • Be informed of and offered participation in (or the right to withdraw from) any proposed use of their data beyond model development and benchmarking.
  • Negotiate bilateral agreements with custodians or other researchers that supplement or modify the baseline consortium terms (see Section 5.3).

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the dataset is deposited in one of the three scientific archives before or at the time of joining the consortium. This entails making sure that the act of archiving and of sharing via an archive is consistent with relevant ethical and legal requirements.
  • Ensure that custodians (and their supervisees, in the case of The Language Archive) have been officially given access to the relevant dataset.
  • Make sure that the desired citation for the dataset is clear in the relevant scientific archive. This is typically automated in all three archives; in the case of HomeBank, you are also free to suggest additional citations, but custodians may only be able to include one citation in their reference list.
  • Reply to information regarding potential participation as co-author in a timely manner.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all third-party access requests to their dataset. Corpus collectors cannot delegate this responsibility to the custodians (see Section 6).
  • Inform the custodians of changes in your email and/or if you step down as responsible person for that dataset.
  • If leaving for a long time (longer than 4 weeks), we strongly recommend leaving someone officially in charge of your dataset. Make sure you add this person with appropriate rights in the scientific archive, and notify the custodians.
